DEFCON Ruck March 6/16

Tampa Riverwalk | 4.8 miles | Urban/Paved

A ruck march with a litter carry event typically involves teams of individuals completing a specified distance while carrying a weighted backpack (rucksack) and a litter or stretcher with a simulated casualty. This event is commonly found in military or emergency responder training and competitions, as it simulates real-life scenarios where injured individuals need to be evacuated from the field.

Here's a description of the event and what participants might expect:

**Event Description:**

- Teams of usually four members participate, with each member having specific roles such as ruck carrier, litter bearers, and possibly a team leader.

- The team is required to carry a fully loaded rucksack, adding a significant weight to simulate field conditions. The weight can vary depending on the event's requirements, but it's often around 35-50 pounds per person.

- Additionally, the team must carry a litter or stretcher, which can be a collapsible or rigid structure designed to transport an injured person. The litter should be equipped with straps and handles for easy carrying.

- The distance of the ruck march can vary widely, but it's usually between 5 to 15 miles. The terrain may also vary from flat roads to rugged trails, adding to the challenge.

- Teams are expected to maintain a steady pace throughout the march while ensuring the safety and comfort of the simulated casualty on the litter.

**What to Bring:**

1. **Rucksack**: Each team member should have a sturdy rucksack capable of carrying the required weight. It should have padded shoulder straps and a waist belt for proper weight distribution and comfort.

2. **Litter or Stretcher**: The team needs a durable litter or stretcher capable of carrying the simulated casualty. It should be lightweight yet sturdy enough to withstand the rigors of the march.

3. **Medical Supplies**: While not always required in every event, some may ask participants to carry basic medical supplies such as bandages, splints, or even a first aid kit. This adds to the realism of the scenario and ensures teams are prepared for emergencies.

4. **Water and Hydration**: Staying hydrated is crucial during any physical activity, especially during a ruck march. Each team member should carry an ample supply of water or a hydration bladder in their rucksack.

5. **Proper Footwear**: Comfortable and supportive footwear is essential for long-distance walking or hiking. Participants should wear sturdy boots or shoes with good ankle support and cushioning to prevent blisters and injuries.

6. **Appropriate Clothing**: Dress in moisture-wicking clothing suitable for the weather conditions. Layers are essential for adjusting to changing temperatures. Also, consider wearing clothing that minimizes chafing.

7. **Navigation and Communication**: Depending on the event's requirements, teams may need to carry navigation tools such as a map, compass, or GPS device. Communication devices like radios or cell phones may also be necessary for safety and coordination.

Before participating, ensure you're familiar with the event's rules and requirements. Training and preparation are key to performing well and safely completing the ruck march with a litter carry event.
